Following in Jim Harbaugh’s footsteps, Greg Roman and Vic Fangio left Stanford Friday to join the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff. Roman, who was Stanford’s associate head coach under Harbaugh last season, will serve as the 49ers offensive coordinator and Fangio will be the team’s defensive coordinator–the same position he held with the Cardinal last season.
Also joining Harbaugh’s staff in San Francisco is Tim Drevno, who coached offensive line and tight ends at Stanford the past four years.
Both Roman and Fangio were rumored to be candidates for Stanford’s head coaching position after Harbaugh left the Farm for San Francisco. Stanford instead hired another assistant coach, David Shaw, yesterday to replace Harbaugh.
Roman spent two years at Stanford and played a key role in engineering Stanford’s prolific running game. Prior to coming to Stanford he was an NFL assistant for 12 seasons.
Fangio spent just one season at Stanford after 24 as a coach in the NFL. In that one season he made quite an impact–Stanford’s defense jumped from No 69 in the nation in 2009 to No. 11 in 2010 under Fangio.
