Traditions abounded at Los Robles Magnet Academy Friday, as the East Palo Alto school hosted a family celebration of Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, the Mexican holiday honoring deceased loved ones. Student performances by the ballet folklórico and American Sign Language clubs were followed by a visit from Movimiento Cultural Anahuac, an Aztec dance group based in the Bay Area.
As a dual immersion school, Los Robles teaches classes in both English and Spanish and promotes “bilingualism, biliteracy and biculturalism,” according to Principal Beatrice Martinez. She said the event was an opportunity to share a cultural tradition important to many families at the school and turn it into a learning experience for students.
