A Cambodian women’s group — The Devata Giving Circle — put on a talent showcase in San Francisco’s Mission District on Sept. 28, featuring a selection of Cambodian-American musicians and performers.
The talent at the event included singer-songwriter Laura Mam, traditional dancer Ravy Mey, spoken word artists Ya Ya and Maurice Seaty and rapper RJ Sin — all Bay Area residents hoping to share their skills both locally and back in Cambodia. Over a hundred guests attended the event, including both Cambodian-Americans and Bay Area citizens outside of the community interested in Cambodian culture.
All proceeds from the talent showcase will be channeled into The Devata Giving Circle, a women’s professional organization that raises funds for charitable grants to community organizations assisting Cambodians in the United States. Recent grantees include the Banteay Srei young women’s organization, Cambodian Community Development Inc., the Applied Social Research Institute of Cambodia and other organizations.
