On Saturday, Nov. 16, Aurora — an art piece created by Charles Gadeken that originally debuted at Burning Man in 2011 — will finally be lit in front of Palo Alto’s City Hall. It will remain there for 365 days.
Both Gadeken and Mayor Greg Scharff will present Aurora to the public at the free, family-friendly event.
The festivities will begin at 3 p.m. at King Plaza in front of City Hall, and the Lighting Ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. Participants will have the chance to make a leaf that will become part of the tree and will be listed on the project’s website if they choose to make a donation.
To date, the Aurora Palo Alto group — under the guidance of Harry Hirschman and his kids, Sam and Julia — has raised roughly $35,000 for the modifications needed for public installation, out of a total budget of approximately $100,000. Major contributors such as The Black Rock Arts Foundation, Gener8 and Holmes Culley have supported the initiative.
