The largest LED sculpture in the world had its grand lighting ceremony last night in San Francisco. The Bay Lights, by artist Leo Villareal, places 25,000 LED lights on the Bay Bridge.
Tuesday at 9 p.m., the lights came to life in front of a massive crowd who braved the rainy weather to watch the lights debut.
The Bay Lights span the 1.8-mile bridge, reaching over 500 feet high. For the next two years, they will be on from dusk until 2 a.m.
This privately funded project cost $8 million, with $2 million more needed in finishing funds. Conservative estimates have suggested The Bay Lights will add $97 million to the local economy.
