The South Bay and Peninsula celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with the 29th annual Freedom Train ride, a reduced-fare Caltrain roundtrip from San Jose to San Francisco.
A long line formed early Monday morning at the San Jose Diridon Caltrain Station to await the 9:30 a.m. train. Making stops in Sunnyvale, Palo Alto and San Mateo before reaching San Francisco, the train traveled about 54 miles — the distance King marched from Selma to Montgomery, Ala. in 1965 to demand equal rights for African Americans. Once the train arrived at its destination, droves of passengers marched 1.5 miles to continue celebrating the civil rights leader’s legacy at a festival held at Yerba Buena Gardens. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Santa Clara Valley hosts the Freedom Train ride every year.
