Long-time Palo Alto resident Dr. Maren Pedersen has been commuting by bike since she was 12. Her love of biking has kept her on the road through a lifetime of ups and downs. She knows the city’s bicycle terrain by heart, and in this video, she shares why she – and her family – will always be committed to biking for their local transportation.

I could not have said any of this better myself.
I rode to school by myself, starting in the fourth grade, and these days I try to ride my bike for all of my local errands. I’ve pretty much eliminated my bike from my weekday routine, which required quitting a well-paying job that required a daily 40-minute freeway commute in favor of trying to build my own business locally.
It seems we really need to actively fight FEAR in our everyday lives, including fear of others’ judgments of us. It seems like Dr. Pedersen would choose one bad accident over a lifetime of living in fear. Bravo.
Her experience might be a good reason to consider running the widest tires one can fit on one’s bike. Skinny tires only benefit those who are racing against the clock. Wide tires are more comfortable, safer, and not much slower.
