On May 17 and 18, Beautiful Day — an organization that puts on community service events in Santa Clara County — partnered with El Carmelo Elementary School in Palo Alto for a weekend of cleanup and remodeling.

Over 100 volunteers lent a hand to help clean classrooms, improve landscaping and overhaul the old teacher’s lounge. Volunteers included church members, people from the local community and El Carmelo staff. “The progress has been amazing,” said Nellie Wong, a volunteer at El Carmelo. “We’ve got elementary school kids all the way up to seniors and everyone is always bringing something to the table: their energy, their smile, their hard work.”

The project at El Carmelo was just one of many service events taking place this weekend as part of Beautiful Day’s largest outreach program of the year.

Beautiful Day has helped organize 11 events this month, ranging from East Palo Alto to Morgan Hill. Projects have included the restoration of schools, parks and recovery centers. “Beautiful Day started out with little projects and quickly grew to have 1,500 volunteers,” said Courtney Cordero, a project director for Beautiful Day. “Now, it is a movement. This year we have 5,500 volunteers.”
