Esther Nio started her own cafe – Esther’s German Bakery in Los Altos – because she and her family missed the familiar food of Germany. The cafe offers German-style meals, from the familiar bratwurst to lesser-known dishes, such as kartoffel puffer.
Esther’s has become a bit of a German gathering place. Several times a month, various groups, such as the German-American Business Association, get together for Stammtisch. Meaning “regulars’ table” in German, the gatherings attract a wide range of people, from those who grew up in Germany and speak the language fluently, to those who are only starting to learn.
GABA Stammtisch meets at 7 p.m. every third Wednesday of the month. Esther’s German Bakery is located at 987 North San Antonio Road in Los Altos.
